Over 20,000 persons who are members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from Essien Udim, the native town of Mr. Godswil Akpabio, have dumped APC for the main opposition party Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Although hired thugs attacked members at the event, they still defected to PDP, a witness narrated.
Mr. Moses Ekpo, the state Deputy Governor was among those who escaped attack by the thugs.
The new converts were received at
Unity Hall of Essien Udim Local Government Council headquarters.
Mr. Ukpong Akpabio, younger brother to Akpabio also gave support to PDP.
At the pick of the event when the Deputy Governor was receiving the defectors, thugs invaded the venue and carried out some attacks, a witness said.
Mr. Adionganye Akpabio, a cousin to Akpabio was alleged to have led the thugs.
Mr. Ukpong Akpabio, the state Commissioner for Investment, Commerce and Industry, narrated how the police averted the grave attack planned by the thugs and thank the police for prompt response.
The thugs wounded many and destroyed vehicles, Ukpong disclosed.
One of the cars damaged was a Honda Accord belonging to the PDP Chapter Chairman in Essien Udim, Mr. Ntiedo Usoro.
Mr. Ufot EBong, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Technical Matters confirmed the attack and narrated how the thugs came armed and planned to kill people at the event.
