Akpabio leaves 8 Senate, refuses to account for N1.142 Billion Constituency Project he nominated

Mr. Godswill Akpabio has left the 8 Senate without accounting for N1.142 Billion Constituency Project he nominated.

Mr. Godswill Akpabio, a former Nigerian Senator from Akwa-Ibom North West Senatorial District  nominated N1.142 billion for the 2018 constituency project, this is even as he has refused to account for N705 Million Constituency Projects he nominated in 2017.

Under the new deal, N200 million will be expended for the construction of Ibiakpan Nto-Akan road, and worse still, the projects appeared twice, making the government pay twice for the same the project.

WEST AFRICA REPORTERS (WAR), had reported how Akpabio refused to give an account of the N705 million he nominated in 2017.

Tracka a nongovernmental organization that monitors government project implementation uncovered how Akpabio, nominated  N705 million in 2017 as constituency projects and refused to account for the funds released.

The organization through the Freedom of Information asked Akpabio to show the people of Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial district the locations and implementation status of the projects. A demand Akpabio refused to respond to.

Worse still, Akpabio nominated another N1.142 Billion Constituency Project for 2018 and has refused to account for the money while he has since left the Senate having been defeated in the last Senatorial election.

Akpabio is becoming notorious among the Senators that nominate constituency project and refuse to account for them with their constituency having little and no knowledge of the projects allocated to their community.

WAR had reported how Mr. Bassey Albert, a Nigerian Senator, representing Akwa Ibom North East at the National Assembly, said anybody who wants accountability on the constituency projects in his community should go to Godswill Akpabio.

The constituency projects, I nominated were submitted to Akpabio to be included in my constituency projects, Bassey told TRACKA.

Akpabio is not the only Senator guilty of the act of refusing accountability as regards constituency project.

Often many Federal Lawmakers hide under the cover of constituency project, collaborate with the Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to insert monies in into the National Budget. They lay claim that the funds will be used for constituency projects.

However, Nigeria experience has shown, Federal Lawmakers after nominating the projects, do not use the funds for the original intended purpose. And in cases where projects are executed, they simply carry out substandard projects that are not in conformity with the original design.
