Armed bandits on Friday stormed a Juma’at Mosque in Dutsin Gari village in Kanoma, Zamfara State. The bandits reportedly killed 5 persons and abducted the Imam and about 40 other congregants.
The village, CRIMECHANNELS gathered, has been a target of kidnappers in the past few weeks.
According to residents of the village, the attackers, numbering about 100, came on motorcycles. Upon arrival, they shot sporadically, in a bid to scare the worshippers and other people living in the area.
An eyewitness told newsmen that the sporadic gunshots created stampede midway into the prayer, causing the Imam to cut short the session at first Rakaa.
The Imam, simply identified as Mallam Yahaya, was then taken on a motorcycle into the bush alongside at least 40 other worshippers.
However, a source in the village, said that the Imam and some other worshippers that were abducted were later released on Saturday.
When contacted for comment on the incident, the spokesman for Zamfara State Police Command, Mohammed Shehu, said that he would give more details of the incident soon.
