Mr. Yahaya Bello, the Kogi state Governor has bowed to pressure from the local government workers and has ordered the immediate payment of local government workers salaries.
Mr. Alhaji Taufiq Isa, Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria disclosed the governor directive to journalists on Wednesday at Lokoja, the Kogi state capital.
He said Bello gave the directive since last.
Local government workers in the state had on Tuesday issued a five-day ultimatum to the state government to comply with NFIU directives on payment of full salaries to local government workers.
WEST AFRICA REPORTERS (WAR) on Wednesday reported a massive protest in Lokoja, the Kogi state capital by Local Government staff who trooped to the street to demand their salaries.
The protesters blocked Kogi Kotokarifi Road.
They were heard chanting, Bello we need full autonomy and not a percentage, pay us our money.
This newspaper had reported how Bello forced the Directors of Local Government to give him N1.8 billion from the funds sent to them by the federal government to pay salaries.
An action a group has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC asking them to investigate the matter.
The development is raising tension across the state with the DLGs allegedly to be in the detention of the EFCC since Friday.
