The Boko Haram insurgents have ambushed Nigerian military in Yobe state killing their commander and 20 other soldiers, TheCable, an online newspaper is reporting.
The insurgents attacked the soldiers on route from Borogozo in Yobe to the headquarters of the army’s 29 task force brigade.
A military source in sector 2 headquarters of operation Lafiya Dole told TheCable that the incident happened around 6pm on Wednesday.
“They were on their way to Benisheikh when they ran into the enemy. The commander of that brigade, a colonel, and about 20 soldiers were killed,” he said.
The source say although a reinforcement team was sent to the community, the army commander had died before their arrival.
Besides the commander, a captain was also killed.
The deceased have since been taken to 7 division hospital in Maiduguri, Borno state capital.
The military is yet to make an official statement on the killing.
