Buhari govt seeks to scrap alcohol advertisement in Nigeria

Mr. Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is seeking to scrap alcohol advertisement; in Nigerian, an action the administration says is to discourage the use of alcohol.

A committee put in place in 2018, the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse has recommended scraping alcohol advertisements in Nigeria.

Mr. Buba Marwa, the committee chairman made this known on Monday while appearing on a channels television programme “Sunrise Daily”.

“You really can’t say zero-alcohol because people have the rights,” he said. “But when you consume more than is required and perhaps you are caught driving drunk, you know there is a penalty. So these penalties also have to be enforced.”

The committee set up in December 2018, submitted its report to the President in October 2019, one year after.

However, the committee recommendation implementation is on hold as another committee headed by Mr. Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation is said to be reviewing the earlier report.
