Community residents in Katsina are groaning in pain as about four bridges linking their areas have collapsed WAR has learned.
The bridge which links Batsari and Kurfi Local Government Areas of the State collapsed after a heavy rainfall Daily Trust reports.
Another bridge around Shinkafi Junction along Katsina metropolis ring road was reportedly collapsed, which has made the area inaccessible for the residents.
Mr. Bishir Gide, Banye community head while confirming the incident has since appealed to the Katsina State government to help the community address the issue, pointing out that the bridge collapse is affecting activities in the community.
“We began to notice the river banks caving in and we drew the attention of those concerned but nothing was done, only to wake up after the rainfall to find out the sand beneath the bridge has been washed away, making it risky to pass.” Umar Kafinta said.
Aminu Lawal Batsari said; “For us in Batsari, it is now a double tragedy. We have to face banditry and now the broken bridge. This bridge is the major link that connects us easily to Katsina and the route for soldiers coming to fight bandits, we need the government to hurriedly fix it for our survival.”
When contacted, the head of State Road Maintenance Agency, Engr Surajo Yazeed, said the agency was aware of the incident and presently working in collaboration with the Federal Road Maintenance Agency, FERMA, whose purview some of the bridges fall under to fix them.
“We have already mobilized to the areas to see what we can do and as soon as possible, we will fix them so that movement of goods and services can continue,” he said.
He said the bridge had collapsed as a result of the changing direction of rivers underneath, thereby washing up the soil beside the bridges and causing them to cave in.
