Coronavirus lockdown: Residents groan as a pure water bag becomes N300 in Benin Edo state

Residents of Benin City, the Edo state capital are lamenting over the high cost of sachet pure water in their area.

Mr. Ahmed Mustapha, a Benin City resident said they are now buying a bag of sachet water in Benin City for N300 saying that it is too expensive for the poor to afford.

Corroborating his claim, Mr. Nik Ray, said sachet water that use to sell for N10 is now N30.

Miss Philemon, a hairdresser, while lamenting on the high cost of water and other food items in Benin City, called on the state government to immediately put in place a task force that will monitor food item prices across the state.

Miss Joy, another Benin City resident, while speaking to a journalist, pointed out that if the government does not take a proactive step to checkmate the exploitation going on as a result of coronavirus lockdown, the poor will break the rule and come out on the street, describing the exploitation as unbearable in the midst of poverty among the citizens.

Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the Edo state governor has ordered a total lockdown in Benin city and other parts of the state to contain the spread coronavirus.

Determined to enforce the lockdown order, the Edo State Government has directed the security agencies to enforce full compliance.
