Exclusive: NYSC Seizes Foreign Corps member discharge certificate, asks them to prove their Bachelor degree authenticity

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is alleged to have seized Foreign Corps member discharge certificate, asking them to provide proof that their Bachelor degree certificate is genuine before they can be given the discharge certificate.

Joy, a corps member who served in Kano, and prefers only her first name mentioned, told WEST AFRICA REPORTERS (WAR) via a telephone conversation that, NYSC accused foreign students of forging and purchasing their Bachelor degree abroad.

She said the NYSC management, is alleging that some persons suspected to have internet fraud (YAHOO YAHOO) as their business forged and purchased a certificate from foreign universities and were mobilized for service.

Another female corps member that was deployed to Bauchi state, and has passed out, told WAR, she graduated from Togo and had her certificate seized by the NYSC.

She told this newspaper that they have been asked to come to the NYSC head office in Abuja, the Nigeria capital city, with a proof showing the authenticity of their Bachelor degree, before their NYSC certificate will be released to them.

James who served at Sokoto state and claims he graduated from Ghana, told this newspaper that candidates that were most affected are those that graduated from higher institutions within West Africa.

When WAR sought the explanation of NYSC, Mr. Ajayi Adekunle, from the corps certificate department, confirmed the development to our reporter.

Asked, is it true that NYSC seized foreign discharge certificate, he said yes and asked, if our reporter is one of them.

WAR last month reported how Mr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Director-General has said foreign graduate mobilised for one year National Youth Service is grossly incompetent.

The NYSC boss disclosed in a keynote speech at the meeting of NYSC Management with corps-producing institutions in Africa which held at the National Universities Commission office on Thursday.

He said he has told foreign universities to ensure they graduate quality candidates to be mobilized for the scheme.
