Kids trapped as school building collapses in Lagos, 27 rescued

A three storey school building on Tuesday collapsed at Ita-Faaji area of Lagos Island, trapping many children who were in the classroom learning. 27 of the kids were reportedly rescued.

A witness, Miss. Joy Eze who claims to have her office close to the collapsed building told WEST AFRICA REPORTERS (WAR) via telephone that the number of kids trapped is more than 30, saying other kids who sustained injury have been taken to hospital for medical attention.

The uncompleted building was being used as a classroom, while kids were on the floor of the building when it collapsed.

The trapped kids were rescued by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) officials who rushed to the scene.

Mr. Adebayo Kehinde, the spokesman in a statement issued to the public said there were many survivors as many of the kids were rescued alive.

Others who joined the rescue team were Lagos State Ambulance Service, Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Building Control Agency, Federal Fire Service, National Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Police Force, Rapid Response Squad, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps,  Nigeria Red Cross Society, Lagos State Neighborhood and Safety Corps.
