Kogi LGs groan in pain as Gov Bello refuses to pay 10,000 workers

Workers across the 21 Local Government Areas in Kogi state are groaning in pains as Mr. Yahaya Bello, the state governor refuses to pay over 10,000 workers.

The governor grouped the workers into batches A, B, and C.

The governor has paid Batch A who is 200 in number from each of the 21 local government areas while batch B and C numbering over 10,000 are yet be paid.

Mr. Idoko, an inside source who works in a personnel department in one of the local government areas in Kogi East part of the state, in a telephone conversation with WEST AFRICA REPORTERS (WAR) disclosed that ,at about 500 staff who are in batch B and C are yet to be paid penny for their salaries.

Idoko said, only 200 staff that was grouped as batch A has been paid in my local government. ‘The remaining 500 of us have not been paid’, he told this newspaper.

The official said only 75% of three months salaries were paid by the governor.

We are suffering, we cannot feed our family members anymore, help us tell Bello to pay our salaries, this is not good, he told WAR reporter in a very sorrowful voice.

Mrs. Aisha who did not want her second name mentioned while speaking to WAR, said, many workers in Adavi local government are yet to be paid.

Few persons were selected and paid while many are yet to be paid, she said via telephone conversation.

Local government workers are going through hell in Adavi, we do not know why a state government will be happy to subject its people under a very harsh condition by refusing to pay their salaries, she added.

Senior staff in Okehi local government corroborating what other of his colleagues said, disclosed that workers in his local government area been paid in batches, pointing out that only batch A has been paid while batch B and C who are at about 500 in number are yet to be paid.

Bello has been accused of diverting over N30 billion bailout funds given to him to clear workers salaries, while the governor had said he has paid all salaries and nobody is been owed in his state, local government staff said they are been owed over 40 months salaries.

When WAR south the explanation of the state government, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, the Director General-Media and Publicity to Kogi state governor, declined comment.
