Magu alleged fraud too heavy to be swept under carpet – Official

A top government official has on Tuesday told Punch Newspaper that allegations of fraud against Mr. Ibrahim Magu, the former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are too heavy to be swept under the carpet.

The official said under the Mr. Muhammadu Buhari regime, nobody is above the law and Magu cannot be an exception.

The official said that the panel investigating the former EFCC chairman has been sitting for weeks and has unraveled some of the alleged fraud against him, pointing out they are too heavy to let go.

He however wondered why a man who occupies such a sensitive position will allow himself to get to a point where he will be a suspect, adding that anybody in such position must be seen to be clean and not soil his hands with corruption.

“In consonance with the principle of fairness and justice, it was needful that the acting chairman is given the opportunity to respond to the allegations, which are weighty in nature.

“Under the Muhammadu Buhari administration, nobody is above scrutiny. I repeat nobody. The investigation is to reinforce transparency and accountability, rather than to vitiate it.

“Accountability for our actions or inactions is an inalienable part of democracy.

“In such an elevated position as that of EFCC Chairman, the holder of the position must be above suspicion.

“There is no prejudgment. Absolutely none. The Buhari administration can be counted on to uphold fairness and justice at all times.”

Magu has since been suspected by Buhari on Tuesday following the allegation against him while the president has since begun a search for his replacement.
