N5.6 billion Ibadan-Ilorin road project abandoned

The Ibadan-Ilorin road construction has been abandoned, this is even as the road was awarded for the sum of N5.6 billion.

The project awarded under Sukuk bond was targeted at making Ibadan-Ilorin route a dual carriage high way.

Good as the initiative was, it has since been abandoned.

Tracka officials who were at the project site to monitor the implementation status say there is no work going on and the site has since been abandoned.

Nigeria government last year released N100 billion through sukuk bonds for 25 road projects.

Presenting the cheques to Fasola, Minister of Power Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, former Nigeria Finance, said the money would be used to construct roads to spite economic development.

Sukuk bonds are Islamic bonds, put in place to bring return in investments without infringing on Islamic law that prohibits “riba” or interest.

Insider source say when Mr. Muhammadu Buhari and Monsurat, a Senator represent Oyo North Central were at the site during the president visit to Oyo state, at about 5 kilometres of the road was cleared in pretence that work is going on.

They did not stop by clearing the site, some workers were seen working in an arrangement made to deceive the president, he added.

Another insider source say, during a visit to the site, Monsurat distributed some hand bills that attributed the project to her.

She promised, Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) handling the construction work that monies will be released so that work will continue.

However, RCC top officials have taken decision that it will not mobilize it work force back to site until payment is made, insider source say.

WEST AFRICA REPORTERS (WAR) could not reach RCC for response why they abandoned the construction site.
