Police officers killed by soldiers in Taraba state

Mr. Frank Mba, the police spokesman, in a statement on Wednesday say the military opened fire and killed the officers along Ibi-Jalingo road of the state.

He disclosed that a civilian was also killed in the incident.

Other persons injured in the cross fire were a  police inspector and two sergeants.

The police spokesman, say the injured officers were lucky to have escaped  with gun shot wounds.

Mba said the the officers were in Taraba to make an arrest of Mr. Hamisu, a suspected kidnapper who has been fingered to have carried out  many kidnapping in Taraba state.

The police spokesman said the soldiers after killing the police officers loosed handcuff on the suspect and set him free.

“The Police Operatives, led by ASP Felix Adolije of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) reportedly came under sudden attack and serious shooting by soldiers of the Nigerian Army, along Ibi – Jalingo Road, Taraba State,” he said.

“The Operatives, who were taking the arrested suspect, Alhaji Hamisu to the Command Headquarters in Jalingo, were shot at severally by the soldiers despite sufficient proof that they are Police personnel on legitimate duty.

“Three Policemen (comprising one Inspector and two Sergeants) and one civilian died as a result of gunshot injuries sustained in the attack while others sustained serious gunshot wounds.”

Mba said the freed kidnapper has been on the police wanted list for alleged high profile cases in Taraba state.

He alleged that the kidnappers is been trailed by the police for the abduction of an  Oil-Mogul in Taraba State wherein a ransom of about N100,000,000 was paid.”
