Mr. Bukola Saraki, the Nigeria’s Senate President nominates N1.4 billion in the 2018 constituency projects, says N850 million will be used for the construction of two classrooms blocks.
Under the new deal, N1.4 billion will be channeled to rural intervention projects in Kwara Central.
Worse still, the figures embarked for the projects are inflated, with citizens not having the assurance that the money will be used for its intended purpose.
A quantity surveyor and a civil engineer spoken to, told WEST AFRICA REPORTERS (WAR) that N850 million is huge amount to be used for a two blocks of classroom.
That amount is enough to build a whole school and start a new school, James a civil engineer in Abuja told WAR.
Checks by WAR in open market shows that amount is outrageous, Jennifer, who owns and runs a private school at a satellite town of Abuja told WAR, that amount is unbelievable. Give me that amount I will build three schools and employ teachers she told this Newspaper. Why are our leaders robbing us, she added.
Tracka, an organization working to ensure transparency and accountability in the way government projects are implemented have simplified the 2018 constituency project in info graphs for citizens understanding. In the info graph, Saraki share of the constituency project is N1.4 bllion.
This is even as Saraki has refused to account for the N1.5 billion he nominated in the 2017 budget.
Tracka had asked Saraki to make the information public how the N1.5 billion he nominated in the 2017 constituency project was spent.
A request Saraki has refused to answer.
Attempts made by WAR to reach Saraki for clarification was unsuccessful, his phone could not be reached.
This has become a practice that has undermined Nigeria ability to develop, as the monies are not accounted for. Nigeria experience has shown, the Federal Lawmakers do not account for the funds, they simply hide under the cover of Ministry Department and Agencies, MDAs to avoid accountability.
