Shocking: Niger lawmaker abandons communities, installs N103 million solar light in burial ground

Communities in Niger state have been hit by a surprise as their lawmaker abandoned giving them light to installing solar light for the dead in the burial ground.

Mr. Mohammed Bago, a federal lawmaker in the Nigerian House of Representatives, representing the people of Chanchaga federal constituency of Niger State, had in 2019 nominated installation of solar light in the burial ground as his constitution project.

The lawmaker says the project will cut across different burial grounds in the state located at Limawa A, Nassarawa B, Minna South, Kpakungu Saint Mary,  Kapkungu Soje B, and  Sabon Gari Ward.

Community residents say it is not clear why their lawmaker will abandon residential areas and chose burial ground for N103 million solar lights.

However, Tracka, a tech organization working to ensure public accountability, who was at the project site, said the solar light installation has commenced in the Chanchaga area of the state.

WAR could not immediately reach out to Mr. Bago for a response over his choice of a burial ground for his light project.
