Mrs. Zaheera Baba-Ari, the Nigeria Commodity Exchange Managing Director, an agency established to meet the challenges of Commodity Exchange operations, does not know the price of commodities in the market.
This is even as the agency she heads publishes commodities and its prices on its website.
Baba – Ari who appeared before the Nigerian lawmakers for the 2021 budget defence could not provide answers when asked by the lawmakers to give some breakdown of the price of commodities in the Nigerian market.
The MD who struggled unsuccessfully to provide answers said she does not know the market price while pointing she gets the figures every week and does not keep them.
Angry with her response, the lawmakers said they are disappointed that an MD of a commodity management agency does not know the prices of commodities in the market.
The lawmakers questioned the MD capacity to oversee the agency and how she responds to people who come to her seeking information on the price of commodities.
Baba-Ari is not an exception, often the Nigerian state recruits people into public offices on a patronage basis instead of competency.
And this practice has over the years, contributed to the inability of the civil and public servants to deliver services that will help in the nation’s growth and development, rendering the country completely ineffective.
There were cases of political appointees who had appeared before Nigerian lawmakers during screening and could not recite the country’s National Anthem.
