Mr. Chris Ngige, Nigeria Minister of Labour, says the country medical doctors are leaving for other countries because there are too many doctors in Nigeria.
The minister said, if you have anything that is surplus, you must export to other countries that do not have.
The minster made this disclosure while speaking on a Channels TV programme on Wednesday.
There is nothing wrong with doctors leaving Nigeria to other countries, he said.
“Who said we don’t have enough doctors? We have more than enough. You can quote me. There is nothing wrong in them travelling out”, the minister said.
The minister also said he is happy that when they travel abroad, they earn money and send it back to the country, thereby increasing the foreign exchange earnings of the country.
You cannot call that a brain drain, the minister argues.
This is even as Doctors in many of the government hospitals are complaining of lack of facilities and pay to do their work.
This year alone, over 80 doctors resign and left Kogi state hospital for lack of payment and better welfare.
Still Ngige says that is the right way to go.
