Suspected Boko Haram members caught with School ID cards not our students – University of Maiduguri

The University of Maiduguri has said that suspected Boko Haram Members caught with University school Identity cards are not their students.

Denying the students, the university authority said, since the beginning of Boko Haram, none of its students and staff have been linked to Boko Haram.

Mr. Danjuma Gambo, the University Director, Radio and Public Relations, in a statement on Thursday, said the online report that suspected Boko Haram members caught in the university weeks ago are not members of Boko Haram is not true.

The university spokesperson said investigation from the police has since revealed they are not the institution students.

Gambo said the clarification has become necessary in order to re – assure parents, guardians,  students and the university community that there is no Boko Haram in the institution.

Some students of the University of Maiduguri who are suspected Boko Haram members were arrested by the army.

Insider source from the University of Maiduguri who confirmed the arrest to WEST AFRICA REPORTERS (WAR) said the students have been in the university pretending to be students while they are Boko Haram members.

She said they made attempts to evade the university students’ hostel and kidnap some students, but were forced to retreat by the military who opened fire on them.

The source told WAR that the reported case of Boko Haram attack on the university on Sunday was not from external Boko Haram but the university students who are members of Boko Haram.

This newspaper learned that the students Boko Haram have been in the school for a long time, pretending to be students while working for the insurgency.

They were arrested on the intelligent report given to the army that made it possible for the military to trace them to their hideout.

Many of the arrested students had their authentic university identification card on them, which further confirm their identity as the university students.

Arrested by the soldiers, there were seen in a video been tortured by the army, police and angry students.

Aisha a 400 level student of the university, told WAR that nobody knows where the arrested students were taken to, she alleged that they will be killed and will never return alive.

After the Sunday attack on the university, the army started investigating those behind it, this Newspaper learned.

WAR on the 16th of this month reported Boko Haram attack on the university, an attack that claimed the life of a soldier and a car burnt.

An attack that has since been uncovered to have been carried out by Boko Haram students in the University of Maiduguri. 

One of the suspects during torture and interrogation confessed they wanted to invade the university female hostel on Sunday to kidnap students and demand ransom from the government.

 WAR could not immediately reach out to the university authority to react on the issue.
