Three killed, 1000 houses burnt as Benue, Taraba Jukun Tiv crisis resumes

Three persons have been killed while 1000 houses set ablaze as Tiv Jukum crisis resumes at the Jootar community in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.

The attack that is alleged to have been carried out by Jukun militants took place at about 4:00 am, when the armed men stormed the community, killed residents and set houses ablaze.

Farm produce such as many tubers of yam were also destroyed.

A resident who disclosed the incident said half of the community houses were razed down during that attack.

Mr. Tor-Tyokaar Ibellogo, the Chairman of the Ukum local government while confirming the incident, said the attack was a hugely destructive one.

“I’m right now in Jootar. The level of destruction is massive; not less than 1000 houses were destroyed. We are still recovering bodies but so far we have identified three corpses,” he said, alleging that the attack was carried out by Jukun militia.

Mr. Adeyemi Yekini, an army Major General, while confirming the attack said is it not clear on the exact casualty.

Also, Catherine Anene, Benue state police command spokesperson while confirming the incident said, three dead bodies were recovered after the attack while investigations have commenced to expose those behind the attack.
