Transmitted 2019 election result to server pilot test, not known to law – INEC

Nigeria electoral management body the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed transmitting election results electronically to server.

It says although the 2019 presidential election was transmitted to a server, it says the exercise has no legal backing and cannot stand.

Mr. Mohammed Haruna, the commission Commissioner in charge of Kogi, Kwara, and Nasarawa states, made this known on Thursday at the presentation of 2019 election report by YIAGA Africa Watching The Vote (WTV).

We tried to see if we can commence the method of transmitting election results online using 2019 as a pilot study, the official said.

Although Haruna agreed with YIAGA that there is a Bill before the president for e-collation of election results, he said the bill when signed into law does not give legal backing to electronic result collation.

In presenting the report, Mr. Hussaini Abdu-PhD, chairman, Watching The Vote Working Group of YIAGA AFRICA, said the 2019 elections conducted by INEC fell below expectations of Nigerians and has asked the commission to make a huge improvement in the next election.
