Katsina state on Tuesday recorded violence as police officers and members of Shiites clashed during Ashura procession.
Many were injured in the violence this newspaper learned.
Dr Mr. Abdulkarim Abdulmumin, Shiites spokesman told The Nation on telephone that the procession was distorted and terminated by the policemen at about 8.30 am local time.
He disclosed that the police used
teargas and bullets to disperse Shiites members who were on procession.
We were on peaceful procession when the police stormed at us, arrested some of our members while injuring others, Abdulmumin said.
The spokesman said the action of the police led to violence.
Mr. Gambo Isah, the Katsina state police command said, Shiites members were warned not to carry out any procession.
He vowed that the police is ready to ensure there is peace and security in the state.
The police had earlier issued a warning to Shiites members not to undertake any procession, a warning they disregarded and came out on the street.
