Why sexual harassment bill is against university autonomy – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in 2016 rejected   Sexual harassment Bill, saying it is against the university autonomy.

Mr.  Biodun Ogunyemi, the ASUU president speaking at  a Public Hearing on the Sexual Harassment Bill, organised by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters in Abuja, said the Bill will undermine University room.

The union President said the law establishing university allows it operate without interference.

The law allowed universities to deal with both staff and students misconduct and pointed out that the   law will undermine the university autonomy, Ogunyemi added.

Worse still, some Nigerian university lecturers are notorious for sexually harassing female students.

Often  some of the lecturers demand for sex before they can pass a female students, an action that is popularly known as sex for marks.

Mr. Boniface, a university lecturer at Lagos university was caught in a camera sexually harassing a female students for marks.

An action that has since gone viral.
