The Nigeria main anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has raised alarm over high cases of cybercrimes among the young persons in the southeast zone of the country, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has reported.
Mr. Usman Imam, the head, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), southeast zonal, addressing newsmen on Friday in Enugu on the anti-graft 2019 quarter report, says the high rate of cybercrimes, Yahoo Yahoo’ in the southeast has become a major source of worry to them.
The anti-graft agency says from investigations it has carried out, many of the parents do not know their children are involved in the crime.
“What is very worrisome is that most of the perpetrators of this crime are either students of institutions of higher learning, graduates, youth corps members or secondary school students learning from their elders.
“To think that these criminals are those who will in future take up the responsibility of leading this country must certainly send shivers down the spine of any right-thinking Nigerian,” he said.
The EFCC said, this year alone, it has arrested and confiscated many cars from youth that were gotten from the Yahoo Yahoo proceeds.
The anti-graft agency disclosed that some of the students own cars worth over N10 million. He also called on the youth to be honest and avoid any form of fraud.
“I want to appeal to parents to take up their God-given responsibilities of monitoring their children or wards. In the South East, the case of internet or cybercrime is very alarming,” he said.
